I am an interventional oncologist, a type of interventional radiologist who uses image-guided, minimally invasive techniques to perform procedures to treat cancer.
Rather than making a surgical incision, I perform procedures using miniaturized instruments, many of which are small enough to be used through a needle or catheter. Because of these innovations, many of the procedures I perform use only sedation, without the need of a breathing tube or an overnight stay.

The first experience most patients have with an interventional radiologist is during either a biopsy (to diagnose cancer) or a mediport placement (to begin chemotherapy). Unlike open surgical biopsies, which require a surgical incision, the biopsies I perform are done using a tiny acupuncture-like needle. Nearly all patients go home the same day, and a diagnosis is usually made within two to three days after the biopsy. During mediport placement, I work with each individual¿s body and needs to place a mediport that allows effective delivery of chemotherapy through a small, cosmetically pleasing device.

I am an Interventional Radiologist with specialization in the diagnosis and treatment by minimally invasive methods of
diseases in the chest, abdomen and pelvis. My work where I am lead author highlights innovative techniques to safely
target lymph nodes, hepatic and renal tumors for treatment with image-guided ablation. My work where I am joint author
has shown the benefits of image guided percutaneous radiofrequency ablation to treat renal tumors in patients who are
poor surgical candidates. I have also applied innovative techniques to facilitate percutaneous drainage of abscesses and
biopsies in difficult to reach locations. In 2012, I co-established the Center for Image-Guided Cancer Therapy. The
Center aims to foster clinical and research collaborations with the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center.
In 2003 I established the Tumor Ablation Clinic at the Massachusetts General Hospital and was the director between 2003
and 2013. In 2013, I fostered the integration of the Tumor Ablation clinic into the Liver Multidisciplinary Oncology Clinic at
the Massachusetts General Hospital. I have seen and coordinated the care of approximately 1000 patients who have
been seen in this clinic. I provided education and treatment planning for patients who undergo image-guided thermal
ablation of abdominal tumors. I was responsible for reviewing pre-and post treatment imaging studies and for coordinating
patient care with referring oncologists, surgeons and hepatologists.
My teaching responsibilities have included Fellowship Program Director for Interventional Radiology at the Massachusetts
General Hospital between 2006 and 2016. Since 2020 I have served as the Residency Director for the Integrated and
Independent Interventional Radiology Programs at the Massachusetts General Hospital. I work closely with the Graduate
Medical Education Office at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical
Education to oversee the training and teaching responsibilities of clinical fellows in Vascular and Interventional Radiology.
I was responsible for maintaining educational and administrative requirements of the fellowship with the Accreditation
Council of Graduate Medical Education. Locally, I worked with physicians in all specialties to organize lectures on topics
related to interventional radiology. In 2012, I organized the graduate medical education course titled ¿Gamuts in
Interventional Radiology¿ that aimed to provide continuing education in Interventional Radiology for MGH faculty and
fellows. I have served as faculty examiner for the Comprehensive Examination administered to 4th year Harvard Medical
students. I have mentored 1st year medical students from Tufts University School of Medicine through the Selective
Program. I have mentored approximately 60 fellows and 4 medical students over the last 10 years. I continue to mentor
medical students from Harvard Medical School and the Tufts University School of Medicine.
My training in Abdominal Imaging and Interventional Radiology has allowed me to be at the cutting edge of Interventional
Radiology. I entered my fellowship in Abdominal Imaging and Intervention at the Massachusetts General Hospital when
clinical applications of percutaneous radiofrequency ablations were beginning and I have worked to expand the clinical
applications.
